Randstadt Rail railway tunnel in Rotterdam, Netherlands

With the Randstad Rail construction project, a new modern rail link is being built between the cities of Den Haag and Rotterdam. MSD received an order to deliver the technical equipment for the entry and exit situation of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) for construction of the railway route.

Apart from tramway, buses and suburban railways, the underground railway of Rotterdam is a local passenger transport system within the second largest Dutch city and the oldest underground railway in the Benelux region.

An extension project was started in July 2003. Following completion (2008) it will result in extension of the Erasmuslijn to the 20 km distant Den Haag.
In August 2005, the following equipment with a total weight of approx. 155 to steel was delivered to our customer, Saturn Rotterdam, for the planned tunnel with a diameter of 6,500 mm:
  • Rear stiffening structure with thrust ring and installations
  • shield cradle
  • Entry and exit panel incl. concrete casing pipe and installations
  • Transition structures - shield cradles

In addition, at the end of 2005, MSD delivered the equipment for transporting tunnelling materials and transporting persons.

  • 9 segment wagons
  • 2 mortar carriers 6m³ with electric drive
  • 6 flat wagons
  • 2 passenger cars for 12 people

The wagons, with a track gauge of 900 mm are all completely equipped with spring-mounted axles, pneumatic brake systems and "Willison 3/4" couplings. The maximum width of the wagons is 1500 mm, the maximum height is 1980 mm and the diameter of the wheels is 250-350 mm.
